Officials Identify Victim of Fatal Car Crash in Dougherty County, Georgia

DOUGHERTY COUNTY, GA. – According to an online news report from, officials have identified the victim of a December 29 fatal car crash in Dougherty County. Authorities in the county have still not released a cause for the crash.*

Sometime between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. on December 29, 45-year-old James Joseph Conlan Jr., of Albany, Georgia, was driving on Mud Creek Road in Dougherty County. About four miles from Gillionville Road, Conlan’s vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree. Conlan died at the scene, according to the Dougherty County Coroner’s Office.

It is not yet clear what caused Conlan to drive off the roadway. No other vehicles were involved in the crash. Dougherty County Police are investigating the collision and have not yet released additional information. 

Dougherty County is located in the southern part of the state of Georgia. The county has an estimated population of 90,000, and its major roadways include U.S. Route 18 and U.S. Route 82.

Data from the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety shows a large increase in vehicle accidents in Dougherty County between 2012 and 2016. In 2012, a total of 1,259 vehicle accidents occurred in the county, leading to 410 injuries and five deaths. These numbers rose significantly each following year.

By 2016, vehicle accidents in Dougherty Countyreached 3,746. These accidents resulted in 956 injuries and 20 fatalities. This was the highest number of fatalities during a five-year period. Four of the fatal accidents in 2016 involved alcohol, two involved speeding, two involved motorcyclists, and five involved pedestrians.
