Man Struck by Police Cruiser in Montgomery County, Maryland
MONTGOMERY COUNTY, MD. – According to an online news report from wtop.com, a man was seriously injured after being hit by a police cruiser in Montgomery County, Maryland. The man is expected to survive.*
A Montgomery County police cruiser was traveling south on Georgia Avenue and struck a 21-year-old man in the roadway near Blueridge Avenue in Wheaton, Maryland. It is not yet clear why the crash occurred. The man, who has not been identified, was not walking inside a crosswalk, but it is not clear if a crosswalk was available in the area.
The officer involved, Fritz Calderon, was reportedly not injured. At the time of the crash, he was not responding to an emergency situation and did not have his lights or sirens activated. The pedestrian sustained a “traumatic injury” and was transported to a local hospital as a priority 1 trauma patient, according to the Montgomery County Fire Department.
Though the man was seriously injured, police say he is expected to survive. Maryland police are still investigating the crash and have not released additional information at this time. Anyone with potential information about the incident is encouraged to contact the Wheaton Police Department’s collision reconstruction unit by calling (240) 773-6620.
The same Maryland county had a similar incident take place last month. In November, a Montgomery County police cruiser struck a bicyclist near the intersection of Connecticut Avenue and Jones Bridge Road in Bethesda, Maryland. The cyclist was seriously injured.
