Man in Wheelchair Struck, Killed by Mail Truck in Albany, Georgia

ALBANY, GA. – As reported online by, a man in a wheelchair was struck and killed by a mail truck in Albany, Georgia. Police say no charges will be filed in the case.*

A 55-year-old Glen Kelly Sr. was in a wheelchair, heading east on East Broad Avenue in Albany. Kelly was in the westbound lane of East Broad Avenue, in the 600 block of the roadway, when a Gruman LLC Mail Carrier truck hit him head-on. The driver of the truck told police he did not see Kelly until the crash. 

Kelly sadly died at the scene. The Albany Police Department said no charges would be filed against the driver of the mail truck, who has not been identified. 

“You need to wear light clothes or have some kind of reflectors, something on your bike, wheelchair,” said Dougherty County Coroner Michael Fowler. “If you are going to be walking or either running [at night], you need to have something on so someone can be able to see you, because there are some dark areas on the street.”

No additional information about the accident has been reported at this time. 

Data from the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety shows a large increase in vehicle accidents in Dougherty County between 2012 and 2016. In 2012, a total of 1,259 vehicle accidents occurred in the county, leading to 410 injuries and five deaths. These numbers rose significantly each following year.

By 2016, vehicle accidents in Dougherty Countyreached 3,746. These accidents resulted in 956 injuries and 20 fatalities.
