One Killed, Two Injured in Single-Vehicle Wreck in Columbia County, GA

COLUMBIA COUNTY, GA. – According to an online news report from, one person was killed and two were injured in a single-vehicle wreck in Columbia County, Georgia.*

The accident occurred shortly before midnight on Interstate 20 in Columbia County. Near Exit 194 to Grovetown, a vehicle ran off the side of the road, and the driver overcorrected. The vehicle then traveled across both lanes of traffic, hit the median, and crashed into a guardrail. Upon impact, the vehicle rolled over. 

A passenger in the vehicle, 25-year-old Michael Lyles, of Gastonia, North Carolina, died at the scene. The driver of the vehicle, 18-year-old Austin Dennis (city not reported), and another passenger, Teresa Dennis (age and city not reported), were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. 

It is not yet clear what caused Austin Dennis to drive off the roadway and lose control of the vehicle. Officials report Lyles’s body will be transported to the GBI Crime Lab for an autopsy. No additional information has been reported about the accident at this time. 

According to the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, Columbia County has seen a large jump in vehicle accidents during the last several years. In 2012, 373 vehicle accidents occurred in the county, leading to 63 injuries and eight fatalities. These numbers remained relatively steady during the next three years: 336 accidents in 2013 with 47 injuries and 10 fatalities; 379 accidents in 2014 with 50 injuries and seven fatalities; and 353 accidents in 2015 with 49 injuries and 15 fatalities. 

However, in 2016, the number of vehicle accidents in Columbia County skyrocketed to 4,051. From these accidents, 972 people were injured, and 17 people died. More than half of the fatal accidents that year were related to alcohol or speeding.
