Bicyclist Critically Injured After Struck by Car in Hinesville, GA

HINESVILLE, GA. – According to an online news report from, a bicyclist was critically injured on Christmas Day, after being struck by a car in Hinesville, Georgia. The cyclist has been identified, but the driver of the vehicle has not.*

At approximately 7:30 p.m. on December 25, 33-year-old Erik Konig was biking east on West Oglethorpe Highway in Hinesville. Near Liberty Cinemas, an eastbound truck hit Konig. The circumstances of the crash have not yet been reported. 

Konig was airlifted to a local hospital, where he is reportedly in critical condition. The driver of the truck, who has not been identified at this time, was not injured. It is not yet clear whether the driver will be cited or charged in connection with the bicycle accident

The Hinesville Police Department responded to the scene, and the department’s Traffic Accident Investigation Division will continue working the investigation. No additional information about the accident has been reported at this time. 

Hinesville is located in Liberty County in the southeastern part of the state of Georgia. The county has a population of approximately 61,400 people, and its major roadways include Interstate 95, U.S. Route 17, and U.S. Route 84. 

Compared to more populated counties in the rest of the state, Liberty County has relatively few vehicle accidents. However, data from the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety shows that the number of accidents in the county more than tripled between 2012 and 2016. In 2012, 511 vehicle accidents occurred in Liberty County, leading to 167 injuries and nine deaths. In 2016, nearly 1,600 vehicle collisions occurred in the county, resulting in 450 injuries and 8 deaths. None of those deaths was a bicyclist, but two were pedestrians.
