Man Killed in Crash with Tractor-Trailer in Clarksville, Tennessee

CLARKSVILLE, TN. – According to an online news report from, a man was killed in a tractor-trailer collision on Interstate 24 in Clarksville, Tennessee. The crash took place in an area where traffic had slowed for construction.*

26-year-old Thomas Blackford was driving a Ford Focus westbound on I-24 in Clarksville. Near mile marker 2, traffic slowed for construction, and Blackford crashed into the back of a tractor-trailer. 

Blackford died at the scene. The driver of the tractor-trailer, 58-year-old Vasyl Unhuryan, of Blakeslee, Pennsylvania, was not injured. 

It is not yet clear why Blackford crashed into the tractor-trailer. Tennessee Highway Patrol is still investigating the crash and has not reported additional information at this time. 

Following the crash, both lanes of I-24 West were shut down for more than an hour, while traffic was diverted off the interstate at Exit 4. Massive traffic delays were reported near the scene and on detour roads. The crash was completely cleared at approximately 7 p.m.

According to an article from The Washington Post, about 1.7 million rear-end collisions occur in the United States every year. These are the most common type of vehicle accident in the nation, leading to 1,700 deaths and 500,000 injuries annually. The National Transportation Safety Board estimates that 80 percent of these collisions could be avoided with collision-avoidance systems, like emergency braking systems, available today on many types of vehicles. The NTSB has been encouraging car manufacturers to make these systems standard in all vehicles.
