December 26, 2018

INDEPENDENCE, OR. – According to an online news report from statesmanjournal.com, a woman was killed and three children were injured in a vehicle wreck that occurred in Independence, Oregon.*

26-year-old Hannah Parks, of Dallas, Oregon, was driving a 2005 Cadillac Escalade eastbound on Rogers Lane in Independence. At the intersection with Independence Highway, Parks turned north onto the highway and drove into the path of a southbound 1985 International farm truck.

The farm truck crashed into the driver’s side of the Cadillac, and both vehicles skidded off the roadway. One of the vehicles then caught on fire, and the fire spread to both vehicles.

Parks sadly died at the scene. Three children in the Cadillac were injured and transported to Salem Hospital for treatment. The extent of the children’s injuries is not known, and no identifying information about the children has been reported. The driver of the farm truck, 36-year-old Armando Trapala-Amador, of Independence, was reportedly not injured.

Oregon State Police, the Independence Police Department, and the Oregon Department of Transportation responded to the scene. All lanes of Independence Highway were closed for several hours after the accident to allow crews to investigate and clear the scene. The investigation is ongoing, and no additional information has been released.

According to an article from the National Fire Protection Association, between 2003 and 2007, fire departments throughout the United States responded to almost 290,000 vehicle fires each year. These fires caused annual averages of 480 deaths, 1,525 injuries, and $1.3 billion in property damage. On average, 31 highway vehicle fires were reported every hour during this time period.
