Head-On Crash on Oregon Highway Kills One Driver

December 26, 2018

REDMOND, OR. – According to an online news report from kval.com, a head-on crash on an Oregon highway killed one driver. The other driver was injured but is expected to survive.*

73-year-old Richard James Lanning, of Prineville, Oregon, was driving a Chevrolet Malibu on Highway 97 in Oregon. On the south end of Redmond, Oregon, Lanning crossed the centerline of the roadway and crashed into a commercial truck head-on.

Lanning died at the scene. The driver of the truck, identified as a 48-year-old man from Bend, Oregon, was injured and transported to a local hospital. The extent of his injuries is not known, but officials said they were not believed to be life-threatening. The truck was owned by Bend Roof Truss.

It is not yet clear why Lanning crossed into oncoming traffic. The crash caused Highway 97 to be shut down doe more than three hours while crews investigated and cleared the scene. Local authorities are investigating the crash and have not released additional information to the public at this time.

According to recent reports, head-on vehicle collisions make up a small percentage of all the traffic accidents that occur every year in the United States. However, they account for a significant  percentage of annual fatal collisions in the country. Only 2 percent of all annual U.S. traffic collisions involve head-on collisions, but they cause about 10 percent of annual crash-related deaths in the nation. The impact angle and force of these crashes causes them to be more fatal and lead to more serious injuries than other kinds of traffic collisions.
