Four-Vehicle Crash Shuts Down I-475 in Macon, Georgia

December 28, 2018

MACON, GA. – According to an online news report from 41nbc.com, a four-vehicle crash shut down part of Interstate 475 in Macon, Georgia. The crash involved two tractor-trailers and two passenger cars.*

A tractor-trailer stalled in the middle lane of I-475 North, between Thomaston Road and Zebulon Road in Macon. The driver of the tractor-trailer stepped out and started working on his vehicle. A Chevrolet Silverado then parked in front of the tractor-trailer, and the Chevy driver got out to help the tractor-trailer driver. A second tractor-trailer traveling in the middle lane of the interstate then crashed into the back of the disabled tractor-trailer.

The force of the impact moved the disabled tractor-trailer into the Chevy and a nearby Honda Accord. The Bibb County Coroner pronounced the driver of the first tractor-trailer dead at the scene. The victim has not been identified, pending notification of next-of-kin.

Two others at the scene were injured and transported to the Medical Center, Navicent Health in Macon. They have not been identified and are reported to be in stable condition.

Following the crash, traffic on I-475 North was at a standstill. Drivers were diverted from the interstate onto the exit ramp at Eisenhower Parkway and to Interstate 75 as a detour. The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the truck crash.

Vehicle accidents in Bibb County have seen a dramatic increase in the last several years, according to data from the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety. In 2012, a total of 858 accidents occurred in the county, leading to 220 injuries and 17 fatalities. The total number of accidents actually dropped the following year, to 696, but the number of fatalities grew to 31, which was the highest number of traffic deaths in Bibb County during a five-year period.
