Driver Hits Pedestrian, Flees Scene in DeKalb County, Georgia

DEKALB COUNTY, GA. – According to an online news report from, a driver fatally hit a pedestrian in DeKalb County, Georgia and fled the scene. A witness said the man  drove back by the body before leaving the area.*

The driver of a Ford Expedition struck and killed 39-year-old Monica Tamez, of Tucker, Georgia, as she was walking down Redan Road in Stone Mountain, Georgia. A witness to the incident was driving several car lengths behind the Ford and saw something fly up from in front of the Ford. In the area of Chapman Circle, the witness saw a body lying in the road. 

The witness said the driver of the Ford then turned around and headed back in the opposite direction, as if to see what he had hit. The witness pulled up to a stop sign at the intersection of Redan Road and Muirfield Road and watched the Ford drive past the body and continue on Redan Road. The witness told police he tried to follow the Ford but was unable to catch a license plate number. The Ford had damage to the front and rear, the witness said, including body damage, a hanging headlight, and a broken brake light.

Police tracked down the man they believed was driving the Ford, 49-year-old Earl Barnes III, of Stone Mountain, and placed him under arrest. He was booked into the DeKalb County Jail on charges of first-degree vehicular homicide and hit-and-run. He has since been released on bond. 

The cause of the accident is not yet clear. DeKalb County officials are still investigating and have not released additional information at this time.
