Dooly County, Georgia, Wreck Leaves Two Dead

January 01, 2019

DOOLY COUNTY, GA. – According to an online news report from 13wmaz.com, a wreck in Dooly County, Georgia, left two people dead. It is not yet clear what caused the crash.*

Authorities in Dooly County received a call about a disabled vehicle on Interstate 75 South, near the Pinehurst Exit. A few minutes later, they received another call about a wreck in the same spot. The nature of the crash was not reported.

Two people tragically died in the crash. One of the victims has been identified as 25-year-old Edward Livatt, of Albany, Georgia. The other has been identified as 77-year-old Donald Johnson, of Jacksonville, Florida. It is not clear what caused the wreck, but authorities think weather might have been a factor. It was raining heavily at the time of the crash.

Georgia State Patrol and the Dooly County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene. Part of I-75 South was closed for about four hours while crews cleared the area. Troopers said a semi-truck drove through the debris at the wreck site during this time but did not stop. No additional information has been reported at this time.

According to traffic data from the Georgia Department of Transportation, Georgia looks to be reversing course on fatal car accidents. Based on figures available at this time from the Georgia DOT, so far in 2018, 1,198 traffic fatalities have occurred on Georgia roads. The number is still above the 10-year low of 1,170 (in 2014), but it signals progress for the state, compared to 1,549 traffic deaths in Georgia in 2017.

Part of the change in course can likely be attributed to passage and enforcement of the Hands-Free Georgia Act in 2018. The legislation bans all use of hand-held electronics while driving in Georgia and takes aim at distracted driving.
