14-Year-Old Girl Killed in New Mexico Roll-Over Crash

December 30, 2018

CARLSBAD, NM. – A 14-year-old girl was killed in a roll-over vehicle crash in Carlsbad, New Mexico, according to an online news report from currentargus.com. The girl was one of several children in an SUV driven by another child.*

The crash occurred on Howard Road in Carlsbad. An 2003 Chevrolet Tahoe SUV driven by a 14-year-old child was traveling at a high rate of speed and left the roadway, then rolled over. Seven other children were riding in the vehicle, ages 14 to 17 years. One 14-year-old passenger died in the wreck. Her name has been released but withheld from this story for privacy reasons.

Three other children in the Tahoe were injured and transported to nearby hospitals. Their current medical conditions are not known, but police said the injuries to all were not life-threatening. The other four children in the vehicle were not injured. None of the children has been identified.

New Mexico State Police said the Tahoe was registered to the mother of the 14-year-old driver. It is not clear how the teen came into possession of the vehicle or whether he or she was among the injured. Police said charges are pending the outcome of the investigation.

The cause of the collision is not yet known. It appears the driver somehow lost control of the vehicle. Officers do not think alcohol was a factor in the crash but said it did not appear that seat belts had been used properly. New Mexico State Police and its Accident Reconstruction Unit are investigating the crash and have not yet released additional information.
