Vehicle Hits School Bus in Lowndes County, Georgia

LOWNDES COUNTY, GA. – A vehicle crashed into a school bus in Lowndes County, Georgia according to an online news report from wtxl.com. One person was injured in the crash.*

The accident occurred near Boring Pond Road in Valdosta, Georgia. A Jeep crossed the center line of the road and crashed into a Lowndes County Schools bus. The driver of the Jeep was injured in the crash and transported to South Georgia Medical Center for treatment. The driver has not been identified, and his or her current medical condition is not known. 

Lowndes County Schools said the bus driver was not injured and was not at fault in the accident. It is not clear whether any children were on the school bus at the time of the crash. No injuries to any passengers were reported. A spokesperson for Lowndes County Schools said members the school system were keeping the other driver in their thoughts.

Lowndes County is located on the southern border of the state of Georgia and has an estimated population of almost 115,000. Its major roadways include Interstate 75, U.S. Route 41, U.S. Route 84, and U.S. Route 221. 

Data from the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety show vehicle accidents in Lowndes County have increased during the last several years. In 2013, 1,384 vehicle accidents occurred in the county. That number almost doubled the following year, jumping to 2,620. In 2015, the number of accidents increased to 3,698 and moved up to more than 4,000 in 2016. 

The highest number of fatal accidents in Lowndes County from 2012 to 2016 occurred during 2015, when 18 people died in traffic crashes. Five of the people who died in traffic crashes that year were pedestrians.
