Deputies Locate Car Involved in Hit-and-Run Crash in Barrow County, GA

December 26, 2018

BARROW COUNTY, GA. – Sheriff’s deputies have located the car involved in a hit-and-run vehicle crash in Barrow County, Georgia, according to an online news story from The driver of the car hit and killed a man and his dog, then left the scene.*

66-year-old Marvin Barnes and his dog were on their daily walk in Statham, Georgia. They were almost home on Jefferson Road, when a vehicle ran off the road and hit them. The driver of the vehicle then drove away. Both Barnes and the dog died at the scene.

The Barrow County Sheriff’s Office says the driver somehow lost control of the vehicle and drove about six feet off the roadway, where Barnes and his dog were walking. Based on evidence collected, deputies believed the vehicle was a gray or silver Infiniti, possibly a G-35 or G-36.

On the afternoon of the accident, they located the vehicle behind a house about a mile from the scene of the accident. The vehicle was abandoned, and its registered owner was already in jail in Walton County, Georgia, at the time of the crash.

“The owner of the home cooperated with us,” said Sheriff Jud Smith. “We did a search warrant on the house, search warrant on the car and have processed that since. We are hoping evidence from the car can help us trace back who was there. We are following some leads, several leads, to find out who the driver was of the vehicle and if there were any passengers in the vehicle, as well.”

Sheriff Smith added that he was confident his deputies would find the driver. The Sheriff’s Office is committed to justice in this case, he said.

“Mr. Barnes was just walking his dog in his yard, minding his own business and gets struck, and this person walks away and doesn’t stop,” Smith said. “We are going to find this person, I can tell you that.”
