Pedestrian Seriously Injured in South Carolina Hit-and-Run Crash

December 28, 2018

SPARTANBURG, SC. – According to an online news report from wspa.com, a pedestrian was seriously injured in a hit-and-run traffic collision in Spartanburg, South Carolina.*

The accident occurred in Spartanburg. An unknown vehicle hit a pedestrian on New Cut Road, near Old Settle Road. The driver of the vehicle then left the scene. The pedestrian, who has not been identified, was seriously injured and transported to a local hospital. His or her current condition is not known.

South Carolina Highway Patrol are searching for the missing vehicle and driver. They believe the vehicle might have damage to the right front and/or passenger side. No further description of the vehicle was reported. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Highway Patrol at (864) 241-1000 or Crime Stoppers at (800) CRIME-SC.

According to an article from NPR, pedestrian fatalities in the United States are a significant problem. In 2017, nearly 6,000 pedestrians died in traffic accidents in the U.S., a number that represents a 25-year high for the second year in a row. Pedestrian deaths increased by 27 percent from 2007 to 2016. Two possible explanations for the year-over-year increases are more vehicles on the road due to lower gas prices and high instances of distracted driving.

And while the Governor’s Highway Safety Association says increases in pedestrian fatalities appear to be slowing, too many people are dying in these types of accidents every year. Pedestrian fatalities rose in 2017 in 23 states and the District of Columbia. Five states — California, Florida, Texas, New York, and Arizona — carried 30 percent of the U.S. population in 2017 but made up 43 percent of the pedestrian deaths that year.
