South Carolina Pastor Hit, Killed by Car Trying to Aid Wife in Snowstorm

December 28, 2018

SPARTANBURG, SC. – A South Carolina pastor was hit and killed by a car while he was trying to aid his wife during a snowstorm, according to an online news report from foxcarolina.com. The man was a longtime pastor in Boiling Springs, South Carolina.*

60-year-old Tony J. Didway, of Boiling Springs, South Carolina, was trying to help his wife on Interstate 26. Her car had become stranded in the median of I-26 West, near Old Georgia Road and mile marker 27. A passing vehicle then hit Didway’s wife’s vehicle, which ran into Didway.

Didway was transported to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center with critical injuries. He died on December 11. The coroner’s office says the death was not immediately reported because organ procurement was being arranged. The coroner’s office also requested that South Carolina Highway Patrol to indicate the death was weather-related. At the time of the crash, roads were snow-covered, but it is not clear what events led up to the crash.

The driver of the second vehicle has not been identified. Didway’s wife’s name was also not released. It is not clear whether anyone else was injured in the accident or whether the driver will be charged or cited. South Carolina authorities are still investigating.

Didway was the former pastor at Lifespring Church in Boiling Springs. He had retired from Lifespring but was pastoring at West Columbia First Church of God at the time of his death. Services were planned for December 15 at Lifespring Church on Old Furnace Road in Boiling Springs.
