Georgia Driver Cited in Collision with Paulding County School Bus

December 20, 2018

PAULDING COUNTY, GA. – According to an online news report from mdjonline.com, a driver has been cited for crashing into a school bus in Paulding County, Georgia. The driver is 17 years old.*

A BMW struck a McClure Middle School bus carrying 52 students on Harmony Grove Church Road. The road was wet from rain, which appears to have contributed to the crash. Georgia State Patrol reports the BMW driver was traveling westbound and attempted to negotiate a right curve in the roadway. The BMW started to hydroplane and crossed the centerline of the road, crashing into the front of the eastbound school bus.

Fifteen students on the bus were transported to WellStar Paulding Hospital to be evaluated. They have all since been released, according to the Paulding County Sheriff’s Office. Parents of the middle school students on the bus were all notified, and some parents came to pick up their children at the scene. Others were taken home on a different bus.

The 17-year-old driver of the BMW, who has not been identified, sustained minor injuries but declined treatment beyond the scene. Troopers say the BMW driver was traveling too fast for conditions on the wet roadway, and the teen was cited for the violation.

An incoming school board member for Paulding County has reviewed the incident and says he plans to push for changes to Harmony Grove Church Road, which is the only access road to three schools. Jason Anavitarte, who will assume his board position on January 1, 2019, said he wants to open discussions about fixing infrastructure issues on the road and creating more access points for the schools.
