Two Men Seriously Injured in DUI Crash in Florida

December 20, 2018

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FL. – Two men were seriously injured in a head-on vehicle crash that appears to have been caused by driving under the influence, according to an online news report from tbreporter.com. The crash occurred on a highway in Hillsborough County, Florida.*

34-year-old Matthew Bell, of Valrico, Florida, was driving a 2012 Chevrolet Corvette east on State Route 60 in Hillsborough County. Near Miller Road, a 2017 Jeep Cherokee struck Bell’s Corvette head-on. The Jeep had been traveling west in the eastbound lane and overturned across all lanes of the highway after impact. The Corvette came to a rest in the median.

Bell was critically injured and transported to Tampa General Hospital. His current condition is not known. The driver of the Jeep, 70-year-old Walt Pfeifer, of Valrico, was also injured and transported to Tampa General. His current condition is also not known. Florida Highway Patrol said both drivers had been drinking alcohol before the crash.

The crash shut down State Route 60 East for more than six hours. The lanes finally reopened around 6:30 a.m. that day. Investigation is ongoing, and no additional information has been reported.

In 2017, the rate of drunk driving fatalities in the United States was 3.3 per 100,000 population, according to a report from responsibility.org. Drunk driving accidents accounted for almost 30 percent of all traffic fatalities in the United States in 2017. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that more than 10,874 people died in 2017 in alcohol-related crashes. Sixty-seven percent of those crashes involved drivers with BACs of .15 or greater (nearly double the legal limit).
