One Man Killed, One Injured in Vehicle Crash After Fleeing Florida Police

OSCEOLA COUNTY, FL. – According to an online news report from, one man was killed and another seriously injured December 12 in a vehicle wreck after fleeing police in Osceola County, Florida.*

An Osceola County Sheriff’s deputy was traveling west on Oakwood Drive and turned around to evaluate a 2002 Chevrolet SUV that was traveling east. The SUV then sped away, fleeing the deputy. Officials say the deputy did not turn on his lights or sirens and lost sight of the SUV.

At Henry Jane Avenue, near St. Cloud, the SUV somehow crashed and overturned. A 25-year-old man inside the SUV was killed in the crash. A 27-year-old man was seriously injured and transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. His current condition is not known. Neither man’s name has been released, and it is not clear which of the men was driving the SUV. 

Officials did not indicate a reason why the SUV fled from the deputy. They also did not clarify why the deputy turned around to check out the SUV on Oakwood Drive. The crash is still under investigation, and no further information is available at this time. 

According to data from the Bureau of Justice Statistics, general purpose state and local law enforcement agencies conducted an estimated 68,000 vehicle pursuits in 2012. During 2012, local police conducted eight vehicle pursuits per every 100 officers employed. Sheriff’s offices conducted 9 pursuits per every 100 officers employed. Between 1996 and 2015, an average of 355 people were killed each year in pursuit-related crashes. This averaged to about one person a day.
