Three Hospitalized After Semi-Truck Crash on I-84 in Idaho

December 22, 2018

CASSIA COUNTY, ID. – According to an online news report from, three people were hospitalized after a crash on Interstate 84 in Cassia County, Idaho. The crash involved two semi-trucks, and it is not yet clear what caused the wreck.*

59-year-old Barry W. Piper, of Athens, Alabama, was driving a 2010 Kenworth semi-truck eastbound on I-84 in Cassia County. Near mile marker 227, a westbound 2014 Freightliner semi-truck veered into the left shoulder of the interstate, traveled over the median, and jackknifed in the eastbound lanes. The Freightliner then crashed into Piper’s semi-truck.

The driver of the Freightliner has been identified as 63-year-old James T. Sullivan, of Amarillo, Texas. Reports indicate three people were taken to local hospitals. One was a passenger in Piper’s semi-truck, 56-year-old Holly Hart, of Illinois, and another was a passenger in Sullivan’s semi-truck, 56-year-old Louise J. Sullivan, of Amarillo. They were both transported to Cassia Regional Medical Center with unknown injuries. It is not clear who was the third person injured.

Officials said both semi-truck drivers were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash, but both passengers in the semis were not wearing seat belts. Several lanes on I-84 were blocked for about two hours after the crash while crews investigated and cleared the scene. Traffic backed up in the area during the time of the closures.

It is not yet clear what caused Sullivan to veer into the shoulder and lose control of the tractor-trailer. Idaho authorities are still investigating the accident and have not yet reported additional information.
