Driver Killed After Disabled Vehicle Rear-Ended on South Carolina Interstate
LEXINGTON COUNTY, SC. – According to an online news report from wach.com, a driver was killed after the driver’s disabled vehicle was rear-ended on Interstate 26 on South Carolina. The victim has not yet been identified.*
A 1990 GMC pickup truck was traveling eastbound on Interstate 26 in Lexington County, South Carolina. The pickup experienced an unknown mechanical issue and became disabled in the middle lane of the interstate, near mile marker 104. An eastbound 2011 Ford Edge then rear-ended the pickup.
The driver of the pickup, who has not been identified, was transported to Palmetto Health Richland Hospital with critical injuries and died at the hospital.
Three people were riding in the Ford, and it appears none of them was injured. Authorities say all occupants of the Ford were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash. They did not know whether the driver of the pickup was wearing a seat belt. The South Carolina Highway Patrol is still investigating the accident and has not yet reported additional information.
According to an article from The Washington Post, about 1.7 million rear-end collisions occur in the United States every year. These are the most common type of vehicle accident in the nation, leading to 1,700 deaths and 500,000 injuries annually. The National Transportation Safety Board estimates that 80 percent of these collisions could be avoided with collision-avoidance systems, like emergency braking systems, available today on many types of vehicles. The NTSB has been encouraging car manufacturers to make these systems standard in all vehicles.
