Four-Vehicle Wreck Leaves One Person Dead in Marietta, Georgia

December 20, 2018

MARIETTA, GA. – A four-vehicle wreck left one person dead in Marietta, Georgia, according to an online news report from patch.com. Two of the four vehicles involved were tractor-trailers.*

An Infinity G37 and a 2010 Chevrolet Silverado collided on Interstate 75 South and North Marietta Parkway in Marietta. After impact, both vehicles lost control. The Chevy hit a guardrail on the interstate and traveled back into the roadway, where two tractor-trailers hit it in the southbound lanes.

The Chevy caught on fire at some point in the crash, and a male passenger in the right rear of the vehicle was ejected. This passenger, identified as a 54-year-old man from Atlanta, died at the scene. His name has not been released.

No one else was seriously injured in the crash. Police said all parties stayed at the scene and were cooperating. The crash caused all lanes of I-75 South to be shut down while crews investigated and cleared the wreckage. Traffic was delayed for several hours throughout Cobb County because of the interstate closure. No additional information about the crash is available at this time.

According to data from the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, Cobb County is the site of numerous vehicle accidents each year, with an increase in these accidents occurring during the span of several years. The Governor’s Office of Highway Safety collected data on accidents in the county from 2012 to 2016. In 2012, a total of 11,767 vehicle accidents occurred in Cobb County, leading to 2,860 injuries and 47 deaths.

By 2016, those numbers had increased to 34,985 total accidents, 8,470 injuries, and 59 deaths. During both 2012 and 2016, more than half of the fatality accidents in Cobb County were related to speeding or alcohol consumption.
