Car Hits, Injures Bicyclist in Savannah, Georgia
SAVANNAH, GA. – According to a new report from wsav.com, a car struck and seriously injured a bicyclist in Savannah, Georgia. The circumstances of the collision are not completely clear at this time.*
27-year-old Patrick MacDonald, of Ellabelle, Georgia, was riding a bicycle eastbound on Louisville Road in Savannah. In the 1100 block of Louisville Road, a westbound Chevrolet Cavalier entered the eastbound acceleration lane to turn left into a business.
“For reasons unknown at this point in the investigation, MacDonald ended up facing south in the eastbound acceleration lane in front of the Cavalier, resulting in the Cavalier striking the bicyclist,” the Savannah Police Department said in a press release.
MacDonald was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries. His current medical condition is not known. The driver of the Cavalier, 52-year-old James Gibby, of Garden City, Georgia, was not injured in the crash. The Savannah Police Department’s Traffic Investigation Unit is investigating the crash and has not yet released additional information.
The Atlanta Regional Commission reports that the number of collisions involving pedestrians and bicyclists in the Atlanta metro area (which includes 20 counties in Georgia) has risen dramatically in about 10 years. In 2006, about 1,700 such collisions occurred in the metro, and by 2015, that number rose to more than 2,500. That represents a 53 percent increase.
During the same time period — 2006 to 2015 — the number of pedestrians and bicyclists who were killed or seriously injured in traffic collisions increased by 26 percent. Byron Rushing, bicyclist and pedestrian program manager with the Atlanta Regional Commission, says these figures show the state is “on the verge of a crisis.” If the trend continues, another 1,100 pedestrians across Georgia will die in traffic crashes before 2022.
