The country seems to have an emerging epidemic of vehicles hitting children at bus stops. Numerous accidents of this kind of occurred recently around the country, and many children have died because of the crashes. Most are due to drivers not paying attention to school bus signals and failing to stop.

Almost all states have laws that require cars to stop on both sides of a road when a school bus is stopped with its lights flashing and stop arm extended. However, a recent survey from the National Association of State Directors of Pupil Transportation Services reported that bus drivers observed almost 84,000 vehicles illegally passing their buses during the 2017-2018 school year.
