Truck Driver Killed in Weather-Related Accident in Alabama
KINGSPORT, AL. – According to an online news report from heraldcourier.com, a truck driver was killed in a weather-related accident on an Alabama interstate. The truck driver was standing outside his tractor-trailer, which had become disabled, when he was hit by another vehicle.*
58-year-old William James Taylor, of Robertsdale, Alabama, was traveling north on Interstate 81 in a tractor-trailer. In the area of Exit 66 in Kingsport, Alabama, his tractor-trailer somehow became disabled. It is not clear what was wrong with the truck, but Taylor pulled over on the side of interstate and got out of the vehicle.
Taylor then started walking away from the truck, and vehicles on the interstate began moving over a lane to give him a safe distance. A northbound 2017 Dodge Journey attempted to move into the left lane of the interstate to make more room for Taylor, and the Dodge struck a patch of slush and snow on the road as it moved over.
The driver of the Dodge, 42-year-old Russell Reigster, of Hughesville, Maryland, then lost control of the vehicle and swerved right, back across both lanes of traffic. The Dodge then struck Taylor, who was walking in the shoulder. Taylor was critically injured and died at the scene.
It is not clear whether Reigster was injured. No other vehicles were involved in the collision, and no other injuries were reported. The Kingsport Police Department is still investigating the collision and has not yet released additional information to the public.
