Truck Strikes, Kills Man Waiting at Bus Stop in Ohio

December 16, 2018

MIAMISBURG, OH. – According to an online news report from boston25news.com, a pickup truck struck and killed a man waiting at a bus stop in Miamisburg, Ohio. The cause of the crash is not yet known.

A man was waiting at a bus stop on Ohio 741 in Miami Township, Montgomery County, Ohio. A pickup truck driving on Ohio 741 veered off the roadway and struck the man. The man died at the scene. He has not been identified, pending notification of next-of-kin.

The driver of the pickup, who has not been identified, was taken to the Miamisburg Police Department for questioning. It is not yet clear why the driver veered off the roadway. Authorities have not indicated whether he or she will face charges for the incident. No additional information has been released at this time.

According to an article from NPR, pedestrian fatalities in the United States are a significant problem. In 2017, nearly 6,000 pedestrians died in traffic accidents in the U.S., a number that represents a 25-year high for the second year in a row. Pedestrian deaths increased by 27 percent from 2007 to 2016. Two possible explanations for the year-over-year increases are more vehicles on the road due to lower gas prices and high instances of distracted driving.

And while the Governor’s Highway Safety Association says increases in pedestrian fatalities appear to be slowing, too many people are dying in these types of accidents every year. Pedestrian fatalities rose in 2017 in 23 states and the District of Columbia. Five states — California, Florida, Texas, New York, and Arizona — carried 30 percent of the U.S. population in 2017 but made up 43 percent of the pedestrian deaths that year.
