Officer Injured After Police Chase Crash in Cobb County, Georgia

December 16, 2018

COBB COUNTY, GA. – A police officer was injured December 10 in a police chase crash on Interstate 575 in Cobb County, Georgia, according to an online news story from*

On the morning of December 10, five police officers from the Holly Springs Police Department were involved in a chase with a white van on I-575 in Cobb County. The chase started with a routine traffic stop and eventually involved the Holly Springs Police, Georgia State Patrol, and other local law enforcement officers.

After 15 miles of chase, a Holly Springs officer performed a PIT maneuver, a move in which an officer positions a police car next to a pursued vehicle and bumps the vehicle to cause it to turn sideways and stop. The PIT maneuver caused both the cruiser and the van to crash near the Interstate 75 interchange. The van hit the median wall of the interstate head-on, and two people jumped out of the van and ran away on foot. The van then burst into flames.

The police officer was transported to WellStar Kennestone Hospital with minor injuries and is reportedly recovering. He or she has not been identified. The occupants of the van are still at-large, and police are searching for them. No additional information has been reported at this time.

According to data from the Bureau of Justice Statistics, general purpose state and local law enforcement agencies conducted an estimated 68,000 vehicle pursuits in 2012. During 2012, local police conducted eight vehicle pursuits per every 100 officers employed. Sheriff’s offices conducted 9 pursuits per every 100 officers employed. Between 1996 and 2015, an average of 355 people were killed each year in pursuit-related crashes. This averaged to about one person a day.
