Rookie Sheriff’s Deputy Saves Man from Burning Vehicle in Texas

December 16, 2018

TERRELL, TX. – According to an online news report from wsbradio.com, a rookie sheriff’s deputy in Texas saved a man from a burning vehicle.*

23-year-old Deputy Conner Martin, of the Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office, responded to the scene of an accident on Interstate 20 in Terrell, Texas, about 30 miles east of Dallas. A truck had crashed into the back of a tractor-trailer, and the truck was on fire with the driver stuck inside.

Bystanders were trying to put out the fire with fire extinguishers, and Martin ran to the truck and looked inside. He found 59-year-old Michael Pierce trapped underneath the truck’s wrecked dash. Footage from Martin’s body camera shows him attempting to free Pierce as the vehicle fills with smoke.

“The steering wheel wasn’t moving, and the flames started to come in on the floorboard, down at his feet and where his legs were trapped,” Martin said. “I was aware of the danger. I really wasn’t scared.”

Martin was finally able to remove the dash panel in the truck, freed Pierce’s legs and pulled him out of the vehicle. Pierce was then airlifted to a hospital in Dallas in stable condition. Thanks to the fast and heroic actions of Martin, Pierce survived the wreck with few injuries. But Martin said he doesn’t feel like a hero; He was just doing his job.

“I think I got lucky, and I was in the right place at the right time to be able to help him,” Martin said. “I know many other deputies here would do the same thing.”

Martin, who is only four months out of the police academy, was evaluated at the scene and not injured. He left the scene of the wreck and finished his shift.
