Man Charged for Hit-and-Run Crash that Killed Motorcyclist in Cartersville, Georgia

CARTERSVILLE, GA. – A man has been charged in connection with a hit-and-run crash that killed a motorcyclist December 1 in Cartersville, Georgia, according to an online news story from* 

Troopers say at approximately 6 a.m. on December 1, a person in a large vehicle was backing out of a private driveway on Rolling Hills Drive SW and struck a motorcyclist who was passing by. A witness in the area, which is located off Ga. 61 in unincorporated Cartersville, said the driver of the car and a few other people moved the car off of the motorcyclist, then the driver left the scene. The motorcyclist, 34-year-old Russell Steven Carr, died at the scene. 

The driver has now been identified as 45-year-old Tony Eugene Barron. Barron was located by authorities and arrested December 7. He was booked into the Bartow County Jail on charges of first-degree vehicular homicide, failure to report an accident with injury/death, hit-and-run, driving with a suspended license, suspended registration, no proof of insurance, and felony probation violation. He is being held on a $7,025 bond, according to jail records. 

Cartersville is located in Bartow County, Georgia, in the northwestern portion of the state. The county has an estimated population of approximately 104,000, and its major roadways include Interstate 75, U.S. Route 41, and U.S. Route 411. 

According to the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, 3,645 vehicle accidents occurred in Bartow County in 2016. These accidents led to injuries to nearly 1,000 people and resulted in the deaths of 26 people. Four of the fatality accidents that year were related to alcohol consumption or speeding.
