Charges Likely Against Driver in Fatal Collision at Ohio Bus Stop

December 14, 2018

MIAMISBURG, OH. – According to an online news report from daytondailynews.com, charges are likely to be filed against the driver of a pickup truck that struck and killed a man waiting at a bus stop on December 8, 2018 in Miamisburg, Ohio.

The collision occurred at approximately 6 p.m. on December 8. A 72-year-old man was waiting at a bus stop on Ohio 741 in Miami Township, Montgomery County, Ohio. A pickup truck driving on Ohio 741 suddenly veered off the roadway and struck the man. The man died at the scene. He has now been identified as Edward Lee Owens.

The driver of the pickup, now identified as 59-year-old Sandra Lynn Rowe, was taken to the Miamisburg Police Department for questioning. It is not yet clear why Rowe veered off the roadway. It is likely that charges will be filed against Rowe, but authorities have not indicated what those charges might entail. Rowe was reportedly arrested on charges of suspected aggravated vehicular homicide and was later released.

Owens’s death has other bus riders questioning the safety of bus stops in the area and whether officials should implement additional security for pedestrians. The incident marks the second time a pedestrian has been killed by a vehicle on Ohio 741 in the past month. At least four other pedestrian fatalities have occurred in the county in 2018.

Statewide, pedestrian fatalities have been increasing during recent years. Pedestrian deaths in Ohio totaled 88 in 2013 and rose to 145 in 2017, according to data from the Ohio State Patrol.
