WINDSOR, NC. – According to an online news report from roanoke-chowannewsherald.com, a truck driver was killed December 7 in a fiery single-vehicle wreck in Windsor, North Carolina.*
The crash occurred at approximately noon on December 7 on the U.S. 17 bypass in Windsor. North Carolina Highway Patrol says 42-year-old Lacy Merle White, of Windsor, was driving a 2005 International grain truck southbound on U.S. 17. For unknown reasons, he drove off the roadway and hit a line of trees about two miles from the Wakelon Road intersection. His 18-wheeler then jackknifed and caught on fire.
White was trapped inside the cab of the truck and died at the scene. An autopsy is being performed, according to authorities, and the results have not yet been released. Troopers could not identify any cause of the accident from their preliminary investigation. No additional information has been reported about the crash at this time.
According to an article from the National Fire Protection Association, between 2003 and 2007, fire departments throughout the United States responded to almost 290,000 vehicle fires each year. These fires caused annual averages of 480 deaths, 1,525 injuries, and $1.3 billion in property damage. On average, 31 highway vehicle fires were reported every hour during this time period.
Ninety-three percent of reported vehicle fires and 92 percent of vehicle fire fatalities involve highway vehicles, such as cars, trucks, buses, RVs, and motorcycles. Highway vehicle fires accounted for 17 percent of reported fires nationally from 2003 to 2007, 12 percent of fire deaths, 8 percent of civilian fire injuries, and 9 percent of property damage from reported fires.
