Two Semi-Trucks Involved in Deadly Collision in California

PLEASANTON, CA. – According to an online news report from, two semi-trucks were involved in a deadly collision December 11 on Interstate 580 in Pleasanton, California.* 

The crash occurred on the afternoon of December 11, at approximately 12:30 p.m., on I-580 West in Pleasanton. Near Fallon Road, a semi-truck attempted to pass another semi-truck and clipped the back of the truck it was passing, causing one of the trucks to overturn on the interstate. 

The driver of the overturned semi, identified as a 32-year-old man from Sacramento, California, died at the scene. His name has not been released. The driver of the other semi, who has not been identified, stayed at the scene and has reportedly been cooperating with police. 

Traffic was delayed in the area of I-580 West and Fallon Road for several hours after the crash. Investigation into the accident is ongoing, and authorities have not yet reported additional information to the public. 

According to data from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, more than 34,000 fatal vehicle crashes occurred in the United States in 2016. These accidents resulted in the deaths of more than 37,000 people. The fatalities averaged 11.6 per 100,000 people and 1.16 per every 100 million miles traveled in the United States. 

On a state level, the fatality rates ranged from 4.0 per every 100,000 people in the District of Columbia to 23.1 per every 100,000 people in Mississippi. The rates also ranged from 0.66 deaths per every 100 million miles traveled in Massachusetts, Minnesota, and Rhode Island, to 1.88 deaths per every 100 million miles traveled in South Carolina. 

California’s 2016 fatality rates, according to the IIHS data, were well below the national ranges. The state’s individual data shows 9.2 deaths in 2016 per every 100,000 people and 0.99 deaths per every 100 million miles traveled.
