Semi-Truck Fatally Hits Pedestrian in Michigan, Leaves Scene

GREENVILLE, MI. – According to an online news report from woodtv.com, a semi-truck fatally hit a pedestrian December 11 in Greenville, Michigan, and left the scene. Police are still looking for the driver of the truck.* 

The collision occurred at approximately 6 p.m. on December 11 at the intersection of M-57/Washington Street and M-91/Lafayette Street in Greenville. A semi-truck traveling east on Washington Street turned north onto Lafayette and hit a woman who was crossing the street. The semi-truck then drove away. 

The woman died at the scene. Her name has not been released. Police in Greenville are working to track down the semi-truck involved and the driver. No additional information has been released about the incident at this time.

According to a report from the Governor’s Highway Safety Association, pedestrian fatalities in the United States have been rising at an alarming rate. Pedestrian deaths have risen substantially faster than other types of traffic deaths, increasing by 27 percent from 2007 to 2016. In 2007, pedestrian deaths accounted for 11 percent of all traffic fatalities in the U.S., and by 2016, that figure rose to 16 percent. Pedestrians are dying in higher numbers in traffic accidents today than at any other time in 33 years. 

The report provides state-specific data, which shows that in 2016, Michigan had a pedestrian fatality rate of 1.69 per every 100,000 people. New Mexico had the highest pedestrian fatality rate at 3.45 per 100,000, and Nebraska had the lowest rate at 0.68 per 100,000.
