Georgia State Patrol Ramping up Enforcement of Distracted Driving

NEWNAN, GA. – According to an online news report from times-herald.com, Georgia State Patrol is ramping up its enforcement of distracted driving in the state.*

Troopers with the Georgia State Patrol Post 24 in Newnan, Georgia, say they are paying particular attention to the county’s backroads and interstates. Troopers say distracted driving accounts for about 22 percent of all crashes and about 16 percent of all fatal crashes. 

Post 24 Troopers issued eight citations and 13 warnings for distracted driving during the month of November. Georgia State Patrol is encouraging drivers to keep their eyes on the road, pay attention to their surroundings, and eliminate as many distractions inside the vehicle as possible. Cell phones, in particular, should be put away or in hands-free mode, per the state’s Hands-Free law. 

Georgia State Patrol Post 24 also issued the following figures for the month of November:

  • 78 total traffic crashes; 31 injuries, 0 fatalities
  • 664 traffic stops
  • 438 traffic citations
  • 22 DUI arrests
  • 254 speeding citations
  • 43 seat belt violations
  • 3 child restraint violations
  • 420 warnings for various infractions 

Newnan is located in Coweta County in the western portion of the state of Georgia. The county is part of the Atlanta metro area and has an estimated population of 143,000. Its major roadways include Interstate 85, U.S. Route 27, and U.S. Route 29.

Vehicle accidents in Coweta County have risen in the last several years, according to data collected by the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety. In 2012, a total of 1,518 vehicle accidents occurred in the county, resulting in injuries to 444 people and 13 deaths. In 2016, the number of vehicle accidents in Coweta County had increased to 4,349. These accidents resulted in 1,118 injuries and 22 fatalities.
