On the morning of December 11, 2018 a Cherokee Area Transportation System bus was traveling northbound on Bells Ferry Road in Canton. At the Little River Bridge, a southbound garbage truck veered over the centerline of the roadway and struck the bus head-on.

The driver of the bus, 45-year-old Deana Harber, of Woodstock, Georgia, was injured and transported to Northside Hospital Cherokee for treatment. Her injuries were reportedly non-life threatening. The only passenger on the bus, 58-year-old Stewart Sutton, of Woodstock, was also injured and taken to Northside Hospital Cherokee for treatment. The extent of his injuries was not reported.

The driver of the garbage truck, 49-year-old Dwight Holcomb, of Emerson, Georgia, and a passenger in the truck, 37-year-old Stephanie Bass, of Emerson, sustained minor injuries. Reports said they were not transported by ambulance to the hospital. It is not clear if they did not require treatment beyond the scene, or if they traveled to the hospital in a private vehicle.

The cause of the crash has not been confirmed, but the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office believes from preliminary investigation that the garbage truck swerved over the centerline to avoid hitting a southbound vehicle that had slowed in front of it. Holcomb was cited for failure to maintain a lane. The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office is continuing to investigate, and no additional information has been reported about the crash at this time.
