Two People Killed in Wrong-Way Crash in Jackson County, GA

JACKSON COUNTY, GA. – According to an online news report from, a wrong-way vehicle crash on Interstate 85 in Jackson County, Georgia, killed two people. It is not yet clear why one of the drivers was traveling in the wrong direction on the interstate.*

The crash occurred at approximately 2:40 a.m. on November 28 on I-85 in Jackson County. A 2005 Ford Mustang was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of the interstate and struck a 2006 Honda Civic head-on. Both drivers died at the scene. No passengers were in either vehicle. 

The driver of the Ford has been identified as 32-year-old Carlos Cobb, of Gainesville, Georgia. The identity of the driver of the Honda has not yet been released, pending notification of the victim’s family. 

It is not yet clear why Cobb was driving in the wrong lanes of the interstate. No information was reported about whether a toxicology analysis would be conducted. Georgia State Patrol is investigating the collision and has not released additional information at this time. 

Jackson County is located in the northeastern part of the state of Georgia. It has an estimated population of approximately 65,000, and its major roadways include Interstate 85, U.S. Route 129, and U.S. Route 441. 

Jackson County has seen an increase in vehicle accident totals, as well as injury and fatality vehicle accidents, in the last several years. Datafrom the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety shows the county was the site of fewer than 1,000 vehicle accidents in 2012, leading to 264 injuries and 14 deaths. 

In 2015, the total number of accidents in the county jumped above 2,000, injury accidents rose to almost 600, and 19 people died in vehicle accidents. The following year, total accidents in Jackson County dropped slightly (1,965), as did injuries from vehicle accidents (527), but accident fatalities increased to 23.
