December 11, 2018

BLACKVILLE, SC. – According to an online news report from augustachronicle.com, a two-vehicle wreck on November 24 resulted in a fire near the Georgia-South Carolina border. The accident involved a BMW and a tractor-trailer and occurred in Blackville, South Carolina, near Augusta, Georgia.*

At approximately 3 p.m. on November 24, 44-year-old Terri Izlar, of Blackville, was pulling out of her driveway in a 2009 BMW. She crossed Izlar Street and ran into the side of a 2012 Volvo tractor-trailer that was parked on the side of the road, according to South Carolina Highway Patrol. Upon impact, a vehicle fire ignited.

It does not appear anyone was inside the tractor-trailer at the time, and no passengers were reported to be in Izlar’s vehicle. No one was injured in the accident. Authorities cited Izlar for driving too fast for conditions. No additional information has been reported at this time.

According to an article from the National Fire Protection Association, between 2003 and 2007, fire departments throughout the United States responded to almost 290,000 vehicle fires each year. These fires caused annual averages of 480 deaths, 1,525 injuries, and $1.3 billion in property damage. On average, 31 highway vehicle fires were reported every hour during this time period.

Ninety-three percent of reported vehicle fires and 92 percent of vehicle fire fatalities involve highway vehicles, such as cars, trucks, buses, RVs, and motorcycles. Highway vehicle fires accounted for 17 percent of reported fires nationally from 2003 to 2007, 12 percent of fire deaths, 8 percent of civilian fire injuries, and 9 percent of property damage from reported fires.
