Two Georgia Southern Students Struck by Car While Riding Scooter

December 11, 2018

STATESBORO, GA. – According to an online news report from thegeorgeanne.com, two students from Georgia Southern University were injured when they were struck by a car while riding an electric scooter.*

Georgia State Patrol reports the students, Taylor McCullough and Daniel Cooney, were riding a Lime electric scooter west on Catherian Avenue and began to cross Fair Road. Part-way across Fair Road, a 2009 Chevy Impala LTZ traveling north in the left lane struck the students’ scooter. Both McCullough and Cooney were thrown from the scooter, and at least one of them struck the windshield of the Chevy.

McCullough and Cooney were both airlifted to a hospital in Savannah with serious injuries. Posts to social media indicate McCullough sustained numerous broken bones and a brain bleed. The extent of Cooney’s injuries is not known.

The driver of the Chevy, Christopher Cutter, was not injured in the accident. Georgia State Patrol reports Cutter was looking down before the crash and did not have time to react when he looked back up at the road and saw the scooter. The report from Troopers also indicates McCullough and Cooney failed to yield before entering the intersection.

A GoFundMe page has been created by friends of McCullough to help her family raise donations for her medical expenses. The page discusses the scooter the two students were riding, saying helmets are not required to ride and asking drivers to use caution around riders. Lime and other electric scooter companies have drawn public ire lately because of the rapid growth in popularity of their vehicles without regulations or safety requirements.
