Car Crashes into Ambulance on I-70 in Kansas; Two Injured

DOUGLAS COUNTY, KS. – According to an online news report from, a car crashed into an ambulance on Interstate 70 in Douglas County, Kansas. The crash resulted in injuries to both occupants of the car.*

79-year-old James A. Beck, of Topeka, Kansas, was driving a 2010 Honda Odyssey westbound on I-70 in Douglas County. Near the Kansas 10 Exit, the Honda collided with a Riley County ambulance. The Honda then spun, hit the interstate barrier wall, and struck the ambulance again. The ambulance traveled across all lanes of the interstate and came to a rest in a ditch.

Beck was transported to Stormont Vail with unknown injuries. A passenger in the Honda, 78-year-old Carol Beck, of Topeka, was also transported to Stormont Vail with injuries. Their current conditions are not known. 

The driver of the ambulance, 33-year-old Scott Ten Eyck, of Wamego, Kansas, was not injured. Riley County EMS reported the ambulance was returning from a patient transport in Kansas City. No patients were in the ambulance at the time of the crash.

Kansas Highway Patrol said everyone involved in the crash was wearing a seat belt. The cause of the crash is not yet clear. No other vehicles were involved. Kansas Highway Patrol is investigating and has not released additional information at this time.

The U.S. also has the fifth-highest rate of motor vehicle deaths based on miles traveled (1.10 deaths per every 100 million miles traveled).
