Tractor-Trailer Runs into Inmate Crew on Side of Maryland Interstate
MYERSVILLE, MD. – A tractor-trailer ran into an inmate work crew on the side of Interstate 70 in Maryland, according to an online news report from wfmd.com. The collision killed one inmate and injured three others.*
A six-inmate crew was working on Interstate 70 West, near Myersville, Maryland. The crew was working on the side of the interstate, next to a correctional services van and trailer parked on the right shoulder of the roadway. Near Route 17, a westbound tractor-trailer swerved into the shoulder of the interstate and struck the trailer attached to the correctional van, then continued forward and hit two of the inmates.
One inmate, 34-year-old Milton Pajak, died at the scene. The second inmate who was struck by the tractor-trailer, 24-year-old Wade Ricketts, was transported to Meritus Medical Center in Hagerstown. The extent of this injuries and his current condition are not known.
In addition, two other inmates were injured when hit with debris from the crash, and they were also transported to Meritus Medical Center. They have been identified as Robert Knight and Aaron Abrecht. They are said to have “lesser injuries.” The other two inmates in the six-person crew were not injured and were secured and transported back to the Maryland Correctional Center via a second corrections van called to the scene.
The correctional officer on site at the time of the wreck was inside the van and was not injured. The driver of the tractor-trailer, 53-year-old Frenel Pierre, of Columbia, Maryland, was also not injured. He stayed at the scene and spoke with police. It is not yet clear whether he will face charges.
Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services Secretary Stephen Moyer said in a statement that all precautions were in place at the time of the wreck. He went on to say that the incident was a tragedy for the inmates and their loved ones and a “sad day” for the department.
