Macon-Bibb County, GA, Adopting ‘Vision Zero’ Plan

December 11, 2018

MACON-BIBB COUNTY, GA. – According to an online news report from, Macon-Bibb County, Georgia, is adopting a “Vision Zero” plan to improve pedestrian safety. The county joins thousands of communities around the country that have pledged to eliminate pedestrian deaths by the year 2030.*

So far in 2018, nine pedestrians have died in Macon-Bibb County because of vehicle collisions. This is an increase from the previous year. Between 2012 and 2016, more than 30 pedestrians were killed in traffic accidents in Bibb County.

“Well we’ve had bad news this year,” Review Board Chairman Tom Ellington said of the number of pedestrian deaths in Macon-Bibb County. “Part of why this board exists is because we have a high rate in Macon-Bibb County of pedestrian fatalities.”

Vision Zero sets standards that communities can adopt to eliminate crash deaths entirely. Macon-Bibb is hoping the plans will help it achieve safer roads for both drivers and pedestrians.

“It’s an ambitious goal, but the philosophy behind it is the idea that these fatalities are preventable, and because it is preventable, they are unacceptable,” Ellington said. “What we have now is assistance from the Federal Highway Administration to basically put together an implementation plan to help us prioritize, figure out next steps, figure out how to secure funding to basically make the transportation network here in Bibb County safer.”

Improvements to the county’s infrastructure and driver/pedestrian education are part of the plan. This includes installation of sidewalks, multiuse trails, pedestrian safety cross walks, and lighting. In addition, the Vision Zero plan will involve analyzing current speed limits to see if they need adjusting.
