Georgia Teen Making Progress in Recovery After Cherokee County Car Crash

CHEROKEE COUNTY, GA. – According to an online news report from, a 17-year-old high school student is making progress in his recovery after being involved in a serious car crash in Cherokee County, Georgia. The crash killed one teenager and injured three others.*

A 2003 Infiniti G35 traveling on Old Orange Mill Road in Cherokee County left the roadway and crashed into a tree. A 17-year-old male who was riding in the front passenger’s seat of the vehicle died in the crash. The victim, Stephen “Stevie” Christopher Smith, was a senior and student athlete at Creekview High School. 

The driver of the vehicle, 17-year-old Yann “Fred” Engamba, and a passenger in the back seat, 17-year-old Chase Burr, were seriously injured in the crash and transported to WellStar Kennestone Hospital. A second passenger in the back seat of the vehicle, a 15 year old, sustained minor injuries. 

Burr, who is also a student and athlete at Creekview High School, has been recovering since the crash, and his family says he is making progress. He was transferred from the intensive care unit to a regular room. His family expects him to remain hospitalized for several more weeks, however. 

The crash occurred during school hours, and it is not clear why the teens were out of school at the time. Officials believe speed was a factor in the accident. Cherokee County Sheriff’s deputies arrested Engamba two days after the crash on charges of first-degree vehicular homicide, serious injury by vehicle, reckless driving, and failure to maintain a lane. He was booked into the Cherokee County Adult Detention Center and later released on bond.
