Longtime California Postal Worker Killed After Hit by Vehicle

December 09, 2018

COMMERCE, CA. – According to an online news report from losangeles.cbslocal.com, a longtime postal worker from California was struck and killed by a vehicle while on the job.*

At approximately 10 a.m. on December 3, 58-year-old USPS worker Joel Perales was delivering mail on South Atlantic Boulevard in Commerce, California. In the 2100 block of the road, Perales was standing outside of his mail truck and was struck by a vehicle. The vehicle then crashed into the mail truck and into a nearby building before coming to a rest.

Perales died at the scene. He was a 30-year member of the postal service and a pastor at Templo de Alabanza in La Mirada, California. He was scheduled to be off on December 3 but was working an extra mail shift to have more money for Christmas gifts, according to his family.

“Of all days, not thinking that this is going to happen, he goes to work,” Perales’s nephew, Adrian Perales, said. “While delivering packages, a car ends up crashing into his truck, and he’s in the back, and the unfortunate happens – he passes away. It’s going to be a hard loss, especially at this time, the holidays and Christmastime. He touched many, many lives.”

It is not yet clear what caused the crash. It appears the driver of the car, who has not been identified, lost control. A witness said the driver was speeding. Police said the driver passed a field sobriety test, but that blood would also be drawn to determine whether the driver was under the influence of any substances.

It is not clear whether the driver or anyone else in the vehicle was injured. One person in the building the vehicle crashed into sustained minor injuries and was transported to a hospital for treatment. No additional information has been reported at this time.
