Teen Driver Killed in Single-Car Crash in Washington

December 08, 2018

YACOLT, WA. – A teenage driver was in a single-car crash in Yacolt, Washington, according to an online news report from thereflector.com. Authorities believe weather might have played a role in the crash.*

A 17-year-old boy was driving a pickup truck on Northeast Kelly Road in Yacolt. In the 34900 block of the road, the teen somehow lost control of the truck, left the roadway, and crashed into the tree. The truck came to a rest on its roof, and the teen died at the scene.

The Clark County Sheriff’s Office believes weather might have been a factor, as roads were icy that day, and a witness told responders that the pickup truck was “fishtailing” before the crash. The victim’s name has not been released, upon request from the family. No additional information has been released at this time.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for teenagers in the United States. In 2015, a total of 2,333 teens between the ages of 16 and 19 were killed in vehicle crashes in the United States. This equates to six teen deaths every day due to motor vehicle injuries. More than 235,000 teenagers of the same age were treated in emergency departments in 2016 for injuries sustained in motor vehicle crashes.

The CDC reports teen drivers are more likely to underestimate dangerous situations and less likely to recognize hazardous situations. They are also more likely than older drivers to make decision errors that lead to vehicle accidents. Teens are statistically more likely to speed and follow other cars too closely.
