Trucker Dies in Fiery Collision Between Two Semi-Trucks in Pauls Valley, Oklahoma

PAULS VALLEY, OK. – A trucker from Texas died in a fiery collision between two semi-trucks on Interstate 35 in Pauls Valley, Oklahoma, according to an online news report from*

At approximately 7:30 a.m. on December 3, a 2014 Volvo semi-truck was parked on the shoulder of I-35 North, near Pauls Valley. A 2005 Freightliner semi-truck veered into the shoulder and struck the Volvo semi-truck from behind. Both trucks caught on fire after the impact. 

The driver of the Freightliner truck suffered severe injuries and tragically died at the scene. He was reportedly 61 years old and from Garland, Texas, but his name has not been released. The driver of the Volvo truck, whose name has also not been released, was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. He has since been released. 

The crash blocked all lanes of I-35 North for several hours, and one lane remained closed for most of the day. Authorities have not yet released a cause of the crash. The investigation is ongoing. 

According to an article from the National Fire Protection Association, between 2003 and 2007, fire departments throughout the United States responded to almost 290,000 vehicle fires each year. These fires caused annual averages of 480 deaths, 1,525 injuries, and $1.3 billion in property damage. On average, 31 highway vehicle fires were reported every hour during this time period. 

Ninety-three percent of reported vehicle fires and 92 percent of vehicle fire fatalities involve highway vehicles, such as cars, trucks, buses, RVs, and motorcycles. Highway vehicle fires accounted for 17 percent of reported fires nationally from 2003 to 2007, 12 percent of fire deaths, 8 percent of civilian fire injuries, and 9 percent of property damage from reported fires.
