Pedestrian Killed in North Carolina Traffic Collision
RALEIGH, NC. – According to an online news report from abc11.com, a pedestrian was killed December 3 in a traffic collision in Raleigh, North Carolina.*
The crash occurred at about 6:45 a.m. on December 3 on Western Boulevard in Raleigh. The Raleigh Police Department says David Paul Miller (age and city not reported) was walking across Western Boulevard, when a truck hit him near Bilyeu Street and Ashe Avenue.
Miller died at the scene. The driver of the truck has not been identified, but officers noted the driver was following all traffic laws before the accident, including the speed limit. Police said Miller was not in a crosswalk at the time but did not indicate whether a crosswalk was available on the road. Authorities are continuing to investigate the crash and have not released additional information at this time.
According to an article from NPR, the United States has high numbers of pedestrian deaths. In 2017, nearly 6,000 pedestrians died in traffic accidents in the U.S., a number that represents a 25-year high for the second year in a row. Pedestrian deaths increased by 27 percent from 2007 to 2016. Two possible explanations for the year-over-year increases are more vehicles on the road due to lower gas prices and high instances of distracted driving.
And while the Governor’s Highway Safety Association says increases in pedestrian fatalities appear to be slowing, too many people are dying in these types of accidents every year. Pedestrian fatalities rose in 2017 in 23 states and the District of Columbia. Five states — California, Florida, Texas, New York, and Arizona — carried 30 percent of the U.S. population in 2017 but made up 43 percent of the pedestrian deaths that year.
