Woman Hospitalized After Being Hit by Car in Atlanta, Georgia

December 07, 2018

ATLANTA, GA. – A woman was hospitalized after being hit by a car in a busy intersection in Atlanta, Georgia, according to an online news report from 11alive.com.*

The incident occurred at approximately 6:30 p.m. on November 23. An unidentified woman walked into the intersection of Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway and Interstate 285 North and was struck by a car. She was transported to a local hospital, Grady Memorial, with a head injury and is reportedly recovering. Police said she was conscious and breathing at the time of transport.

The driver of the car remained at the scene and cooperated with police. Officials do not expect to pursue any charges against the driver, who has not been identified, because of the circumstances of the accident. It seems the driver did not have time to stop when the woman entered the road.

It is still not clear why the woman walked into the intersection. No additional information has been reported.

According to a report from the Governor’s Highway Safety Association, pedestrian fatalities in the United States have been rising at an alarming rate. Pedestrian deaths have risen substantially faster than other types of traffic deaths, increasing by 27 percent from 2007 to 2016. In 2007, pedestrian deaths accounted for 11 percent of all traffic fatalities in the U.S., and by 2016, that figure rose to 16 percent. Pedestrians are dying in higher numbers in traffic accidents today than at any other time in 33 years.

The report provides state-specific data, which shows that in 2016, Georgia had a pedestrian fatality rate of 2.25 per every 100,000 people. New Mexico had the highest pedestrian fatality rate at 3.45 per 100,000, and Nebraska had the lowest rate at 0.68 per 100,000.
