Men Saves Family from Burning Car After Head-On Crash in Massachusetts

December 07, 2018

TAUNTON, MA. – Two men driving by a head-on vehicle crash in Taunton, Massachusetts, saved the lives of an entire family that was trapped inside a burning car, according to a story reported online by*

Mr. Barbosa was on his way to a gathering for his birthday, when he and his friend Josemar Brazao came upon the scene of a serious vehicle crash on Interstate 495 in Taunton. A driver had been traveling the wrong way on the interstate and struck two other vehicles, one of which caught fire after impact.

“It was burning really, really badly,” Barbosa said of the car. “Like to the point where we were like, ‘We have to back out. It’s gonna blow.’”

Despite the extreme risk to themselves, Barbosa and Brazao took action to help the family trapped in the burning, overturned car. Two children were in the back seat, and Brazao smashed the glass of one of the back windows to pull the young boys out. Brazao and Barbosa then turned the vehicle back onto its four wheels and rushed to free the two adults in the front. Barbosa said one of the adults was struggling to get out, so he grabbed the man and pulled him out.

When first responders arrived, it was clear the men had acted just in time.

“When they got there, the car was already gone,” Barbosa said. “Just fire, that’s all you could see. It was really bad. I’m still having nightmares; It’s crazy.”

The wrong-way driver died in the crash, but the family the driver hit survived, thanks to the bravery of the two good Samaritans. Barbosa said he hoped they could all be reunited someday.

“I would definitely like to see them,” he said. “I think it’s one of the best birthdays I will ever have because we saved lives, and that’s all that matters.”
