Man Charged with Vehicular Homicide in Glynn County, GA, Fatal Crash
GLYNN COUNTY, GA. – According to an online news report from thebrunswicknews.com, a man has been charged with vehicular homicide in connection with a fatal crash that occurred in Glynn County, Georgia.*
46-year-old Mr. Sapp, of St. Simons Island, Georgia, was driving a 2000 Chevrolet Silverado southbound on Interstate 95 in south Glynn County. Reports indicate Sapp was driving too fast for rainy conditions, and the truck began to hydroplane. Sapp lost control of the vehicle and crashed into the inside median railing on a bridge overpass. The truck then flipped before coming to a stop.
A passenger in the Chevy, 38-year-old Mr. Matherly, of Brunswick, Georgia, was ejected from the truck and died at the scene. Georgia State Patrol noted he was not wearing a seat belt but did not indicate whether a belt would have saved his life. An additional passenger in the truck, identified only as a female, sustained minor injuries. It is not clear whether she was taken anywhere for treatment beyond the scene.
Sapp was arrested and booked into the Glynn County Detention Center. He has been charged with first-degree vehicular homicide, driving under the influence, and failure to maintain a lane. Georgia State Patrol is continuing to investigate and has not yet released additional information.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 29 people die every day in the United States from motor vehicle crashes involving alcohol-impaired drivers. This breaks down to one alcohol-related vehicle accident fatality every 50 minutes. In 2016, the CDC indicates almost 10,500 people died in alcohol-impaired driving crashes, which accounted for nearly 30 percent of all traffic-related deaths in the United States that year.
