12-Year-Old Georgia Boy Killed When Car Crashes into Closed Garage

December 07, 2018

COVINGTON, GA. – A 12-year-old boy was killed and another boy seriously injured when a car crashed into a closed garage at a Covington, Georgia, home. The story is reported online at*

Two 12-year-old boys were at a house on Kirkland Road in Covington and were in the garage of the home, searching for a missing hamster. The hamster was an early Christmas gift for one of the boys from his grandmother, who owned the home on Kirkland Road. As the boys searched for the loose pet, the driver of a 1997 Dodge Ram overcorrected on a turn outside the home and lost control of the vehicle, crashing through the closed garage door.

The Ram ran over one of the boys and struck a parked vehicle in the garage. The second boy became pinned between that vehicle and the wall of the garage. The boy who was run over suffered severe injuries and was airlifted to Children’s Hospital of Atlanta, where he is still in critical condition. He has reportedly undergone multiple surgeries with additional procedures expected.

The second boy was transported by ambulance to Piedmont Newton Hospital in Covington, where he tragically died of his injuries. Both boys have been identified in local reports, but their names are withheld from this story for privacy reasons. The boy who did not survive is reportedly the son of the Youth Pastor at Gaither’s United Methodist Church. A GoFundMe page has been created to help the families of both boys in the aftermath of the tragedy.

The driver of the Ram has not been identified at this time, but officials indicate charges are pending against him or her. It is not yet clear what caused the driver to overcorrect and lose control. Results of a toxicology analysis are pending.
